The Dairy NZ Rosie Show

Today we went to a great show in the hall. It was all about dairy farming - it was FARMtastic! We had a great discussion about farming and Mrs Simmons could help answer questions because she grew up on a farm.

Thanks Jo!

On the evening of the wearable arts show, Annabelle lost her favourite red shoes. Her Mum Jo said that if anyone found her shoes that she would make cupcakes for the class! Luckily, Sammie found them the next morning. True to her promise, Jo made us all cupcakes today. Thanks Jo, you are a star!

Brainstorming problems and solutions for our wearable arts show...

We are learning to use our initiative and solve problems before they happen. These are our problems and solutions.

Problem: It's raining!
Solution: Bring an umbrella from home to use. Borrow an umbrella from somebody. Share an umbrella with a friend. Wear a jacket over your costume.

Problem: Something falls off your costume on stage.
Solution: Keep going. When you walk off the cat walk scoop down and pick it up.

Problem: The music stops.
Solution: Keep going.

Problem: You need to go to the toilet.
Solution: Go before you put your costume on. Tell Mrs Simmons - there are toilets in the hall foyer. Hold on and go after you have been on stage.

Problem: Your poi gets tangled on you piupiu.
Solution: Carry on walking.

Problem: A thunder storm is noisy.
Solution: Mrs Pelham would turn the music up.

Problem: You trip on stage.
Solution: If you are not hurt, carry on. If you are hurt, stop, Mrs Simmons will come and help you.

Problem: There is a lock down at school.
Solution: Stay with Mrs Simmons. She will lock the door and take the roll. If you are walking to the hall, go into the hall and stay there.

Problem: You turn up late to the show.
Solution: Find Mrs Simmons straight away and put your costume on.

Problem: There is an earthquake.
Solution: Make a turtle. If you are on the catwalk step down and make a turtle. If you are on the stage, make a turtle there. If you are on the stairs, go up or down the stairs and make a turtle on the floor. Wait for an adult to give instructions.

Problem: Mum or Dad might not pick me up after the show.
Solution: Mrs Simmons will ring your parents to pick you up.

Wearable arts and our school values...

We are nearly ready for our wearable arts show and we are wondering how our show preparation and the show fits into our school values. This is what we think:
Fun
We get to do our own designs and sew - Amelia
You get to plan your own ideas - Eden
You get to show people your finished designs - Sammie
The dress rehearsal was fun going on the cat walk - Johani

Respect
We have to wait quietly for our turn and when we watch someone go down the catwalk - Lucy
We have to listen to instructions from the teachers - Lucy
We had to share fabric - Sammie

Community
Spending some time with our year 2 team and showing our wearable arts show to the school and our families - Annabelle
After the show we will have supper together - Tanner

Manaakitanga
We cared for other people in our class and gave them good feedback - Dante
I helped people make their piupiu - Tanner
I helped people put their costumes on - Georgia
If someone doesn't have a poi at the show we know to share ours - Frankie
You say well done to other children - Emma
I will help other children draw their moko on - Lucas

Excellence
Our costumes had to be a great design and show the Maori culture - Hunter
We had to persevere to get our costumes right - Lucy

Initiative
Mum got pricked by a needle and I got her a plaster - Sven
I watched people walk down the catwalk and I learned what to do - Tarin
If you don't have a poi when you are in line, you need to organise to get one from someone else - Samuel
If someone is slow on the catwalk, wait for them to come off before you go on - Samuel

Creativity
We all had our own ideas for our plan - Eden
We watched wearable arts shows on you tube to get ideas - Mrs Simmons

Look what Lucy won!

Lucy has won a cup, medals and a sash for her overall Irish Dancing points in the Friends of Claddagh competition. The cup is for winning second place in the under 7 division. Well done Lucy!

Room 15 Poetry Competition

We had our class poetry competition on Wednesday 28 August. It was wonderful so see so many family members come along to support the children. I was very proud of all the children who learned their poems, projected their voices, looked at the audience and used some actions or props. Ms Ashby (or buddy class teacher) had the very hard job of judging the competition. Her class gave some great feedback to the children. Well done to our place getters: First: Lucy Second: Sven Third: Georgia :)

Wearable Arts - Maori theme

Today we made some decisions about what we will do for our wearable arts show. We will have a Maori theme and we are asking some questions about what traditional Maori clothes were like.

  • How did the cloaks get made?
  • How did they stick the feathers on the cloaks?
  • What were the piupiu skirts made of?
  • What were the head bands made of?
  • Is the moku a tattoo?
  • what do the moku pictures mean?
  • Why do Maori people wear mokus on their chins?
  • What are the rock necklaces made of?
  • Where did they get the rock from?
  • How did they know how to make woven basket?
  • How did poi used to be made?
  • How did they learn how to do poi actions?
  • Did men or women have moku?
Now we know these things about moko:
Together we researched about moko and we learned so new information:
  1. This is how you spell moko: moko
  2. You had to be very brave to get moko and not cry.
  3. It hurts a lot.
  4. While you get a moko you are not allowed to eat.
  5. A moko tells a story about your family.
  6. A moko can look like nature, like a fern frond.
  7. An albatros bone was used as a chisel.
  8. The stone and wood hammers were used to chisel the design.
  9. Chiefs and important people got moko.
  10. Men get moko on their faces. Women get moko on their lips and chins.
  11. Men can have moko on their legs, faces, arms and bottoms also.
  12. A moko is carved into your skin. A tattoo uses a needle.
How will we use this new knowledge in our wearable arts plan?

Minion song

We have all been writing about the school holidays and some children have seen the movie called Despicable Me 2. The word minion was not in our dictionary so Mrs Simmons looked on line at a dictionary to find the correct spelling. She also found this crazy song - with lyrics!

Wearable Arts

Today at reading time the Stars group read about a boy called Kosta who wore his Greek national costume to school. The dance was called the Zorba dance. There's a clip below showing it. What other countries can you think of that have a national costume?

Today Jessie and her Mum Andrea introduced their puppy to us. Aoife is a Golden Retriever and she is 8 weeks old. The puppy missed her Mum and brothers and sisters for the first night, but now she is happy playing with the toys that Jessie gave her to play with. She eats Weetbix and she sleeps a lot as she is busy growing. Thanks for showing us your cute puppy Jessie!

The birthday girls

Today Johani and Eden celebrated their birthdays in class. Johani shared some lovely cupcakes and Eden made a pass the parcel. Let it snow!

It snowed and we were all VERY excited! Johani and Livinya have never been in the snow before! Isabel, Maddie and Henry took some photos around school this morning.  Maddie scooped some ice off the picnic table at home and added some orange juice. She made a slushie! The snow has begun to melt very quickly. This is what we thought about the snow:

  • It was really cold and I liked playing in it. Annabelle
  • It had a snowball fight with Cooper. Georgia
  • I went to the Palms. Lachlan
  • Snow rocks! Amelia
  • I did the moon walk on some ice. Lucas
  • My Mum's car was frozen and the wipers went and we didn't even push a button. Tanner
  • I saw the snow when I got up this morning. Livinya
  • My sister was scared of the snow. Emma
  • Mum's car was covered in slush. Lucy
  • It's a winter wonderland. Isabella
  • The dog's water bowl was frozen. Frankie
  • Today I nearly ice skated to school. Eden
  • I wanted to make a snow man by myself. Rehan
  • When I got up I saw a wee bit of snow. Dante
  • I got a balckcurrant drink when I got to Poppy's after school. Sammie
